Mr. Russell E. Barter

Russell E. Barter passed away peacefully with his loving son at his side on Sunday July 14, 2013 in Valley Center, California. Russ had moved to Guardian Angel Villa in Valley Center after the loss of his wife and life partner Betty the previous year. Russ was born in Maine, May 30, 1928 at a small hospital in Blue Hill Maine. After graduating from High School, Russ joined the Navy, where he served in the Civil Engineer Corps. It was during this time Russ met his wife Betty at a USO dance in Santa Monica (Betty was an Army WAC). After dating briefly, Russ knew he'd met the love of his life. He married Betty in March of 1951 and their lifelong 61 year marriage began. While serving as a Seabee Construction Electrician's Mate, Russ received both the National Defense Service Medal and World War II Victory Medal. Once Russ retired from the Navy, Russ and his young family moved to Midway City, where he worked for Pacific Telephone as a Central Office Repairman and then as a Manager. After settling in Tustin with his family, he joined Rotary and was an active member in both the El Toro and Anaheim East Rotary Clubs. While living in Tustin, Russ was also active in Tustin First Christian Church serving on the Board and was instrumental in establishing a building program which resulted in purchasing property and building the Tustin First Christian Church. Russ was very involved with The Boys Scouts, Troop 33 working at the Scout Christmas Tree Lot every year as well as building canoes for trips down the Colorado River, hiking and camping trips and finally serving as a Scout Master for the troop. In 1973 after retiring from Pacific Telephone, Russ bought Maloney Tire Co. in Anaheim. It was during this time Russ helped to start up Anaheim Sunrise Rotary Club. Russ was dedicated to service all his life, active memberships in both Rotary and Elks Clubs, serving wherever he could. Russ served as Rotary President in Anaheim East Rotary, and it was while here received from Rotary, The Paul Harris Fellow Award. In 1988, his wife Betty retired and in 1990 they moved to Lake Elsinore. Several years later Russ sold Maloney Tire and retired himself for a short time before going back to work part-time maintenance for the Lake Elsinore United School District, he didn't fully retire until he was in his early 80's. In Lake Elsinore he was an active member in the Lake Elsinore/Wildomar, Elks Lodge # 2591, spent many weekends RV Camping with friends and family. One camping club in particular was the Church Mice Square Dancers. He and Betty spent many a Saturday night dancing the night away during their 61 year marriage. Russ Barter is survived by his children; Ann, Art (Lori), Debbie (Mary Lee), Sandy Swaim (Larry), as well as his grandchildren; Jennifer and Christopher (Rosie) along with many wonderful lifelong friends.
