Bernard John Schroer

Bernard John Schroer, " BJ " , a cancer victim, was born on August 14, 1928 and passed away on November 18, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Oregon City, OR in 1928 , he was a part of a large family. He spent most of his childhood in Great Falls, Montana where he met his lovely wife of 65 years, Helen Schrader, married in 1950 and raised the family primarily in California . He is survived by his wife Helen , two brothers, Donald and Jerry Schroer, and his six children and their spouses: Jon ( Dau ), Warren, ( Frances ), Mary ( Aeron Wickes, MD ), Barbara, Paul ( Sherryl ) and Teresa ( Mark Deutman ) , and 5 grandchildren: Kristin ( Nick Burum ), Brandon , Alex , Lauren and Garrett . After serving in the army during the Korean conflict, Bernie signed on with Prudential Life Insurance in 1955 in Montana. He was very successful and was rapidly promoted to Regional Sales Director in Los Angeles, covering San Luis Obispo to Los Angeles. The business success prompted the family to move 6 times during his 25 year service. He and Helen raised their children in Great Falls, MT, Salt Lake City,UT and then Santa Barbara,CA. Bernie and Helen moved to San Diego in 1982 and currently resided in Escondido. They celebrated their 65 wedding anniversary in June with their children. Bernie was an avid golfer all his life and inspired his children to take up the game as well. He won the Cottonwood Club Championship back in 1969 in SLC, which was a golf highlight. He went on to enjoy " 10 hole in ones " and played at San Marcos County Club, aka , St. Marks Mens ' Club for the past 20 years. He always had a political flair and as a young man, he was high school editor of the newspaper, and later advisor to several political campaigns. For more than 20 years, he fervently voiced his opinion on political and community issues with over 100 published letters to the editor of the San Diego Union Tribune! Bernie will be remembered as a gentle man with a sense of humor. He considered his wonderful wife and children his greatest joy in life. He was grateful that they were always there when he needed them. Bernie left his loving family with many fond memories and his easy laugh, quick wit, passion for sports and dancing blue eyes will be greatly missed !
